Raytheon Australia’s association with the Collins Class submarine has demonstrated the company’s ability to be a trusted partner on major undersea projects.

The success of Raytheon Australia’s efforts has centred on a capable and experienced engineering resource matched by proven program management expertise, quality processes, important US linkages and an enviable record of performance in Australian naval systems integration.

What has remained constant is a firm commitment on the part of the company to find innovative ways to address the challenges faced by the customer.

Since 1999 Raytheon Australia’s work on Collins has included:

  • Working with the then incumbent to help stabilise the legacy combat system and reach an initial operational capability;
  • Assuming responsibility for successfully completing the original combat system contract including finalising the shore facility and completing remaining platform deliveries;
  • Being involved in the Combat System Augmentation program;
  • Being selected for the Collins Replacement Combat System; and
  • Supporting the ongoing Replacement Combat System Technical insert program.

The culmination of Raytheon’s considerable and innovative efforts on the replacement combat system occurred in exercises off Hawaii in 2008 when HMAS Waller became the first submarine to undertake a live firing of a CBASS heavyweight torpedo.

This was a demonstration of the company’s proven ability to be a trusted partner of its military customers.
